La Rumba

By Guy Takiyama, Honokai Hale.

The term rumba refers in Cuba to a variety of dances in which a drummer accentuates the dancer’s movements in a complex improvisation. Somewhat similar to the start of the Salsa. These folk styles of rumba -- including columbia, yamb├║ and guaguanc├│ -- have polyrhythmic percussion and call/response singing that was native but strongly favored by African slaves. And they were mixed by background,to make sure they would learn a new language along with their slavery..Many could not even speak the same language.

"There are four great classes of learners: The dumb who stay dumb. The dumb who become wise. The wise who go dumb. The wise who remain wise."

In the 1920s Havana nightclubs promoted a stylized version of the Rumba, Musically, it included bass, guitar, violins, piano and trumpet and was much closer in style to the Cuban Son than to the fast folk rumba. It was mainly for White patrons and tourists, featuring frilly costumes and sexual flirtation between man and woman. It was misinterpreted as the Rumba.

It became a rumba dance show and Cuban bandleader Don Aspiazu toured with in the U.S. where he started a rumba dance craze with the 1930 song, El Manicero (The Peanut Vender). Further confusing the picture was the development of an even more different ballroom rumba dance  by Arthur Murray and other dance profeesionals.

At present we have two official styles, American and International. And the American is further divided into the Arthur Murray and the Fred Astaire schools. They make their own rules. The third is the social night club style which is largely based on the American style but the basic is the alternative method. And they have a lot of different basic moves not covered in the official styles but are very easy to lead and follow.

Kesler and Company

There will be times, even when we get going, that we will want to go to Waikiki and enjoy an extravadanza, dining and dancing. Such an occasion is a show such as Doug Kesler's. He sent me the poster on a postcard. Perhaps I can get it clearer next time and he can find someone to email it to me in JPEG. So we all do the best we can.

You have three weeks so get going. Of course there are more happenings in the West if you can get away from the Rail Catastrophe. Horrible traffic jams cooked up by the Present Rail Party to get more money. But the dancers are finding ways, to find there way through this mess. For tourists Maui is getting to be a better destination than Oahu. Why? The Rail Mess for one thing.

The Dancers in West Oahu will not quit, and they remain among the best dancers in the Pacific. Many in social dancing are using the alternative basic in American Rumba and that looks good, The dancing in Hawaii is progressing very nicely and all in the right direction.

Blog Shaping Up Good

"Too many in our dance social group do not know and don't care if it is not the truth. Proof is almost never required. Sometimes they may repeat it even if it is the truth."

Sea Country is holding up pretty good and getting that independence feeling from the Downtown Fat Cats making million and millions of dollars in profit on the Rail Disaster.

Moanalua Corridor of course is in worse shape than anywhere else on this Island.  The Rail Disaster has struck them pretty herd and they all know it is going to get worse.

Fortunately, Kapolei is also holding up pretty good in their mind set for Second City. There is building and development in process in spite of the Present Rail Party. There will be hundreds of cars missing from the freeways to and from Honolulu. There are people that are thinking, "I coulda been home in 20 minutes." Even though the Dance Pavilion will not be built because the money has to go for the Rail Catastrophe.

Moving Right Along

We don't have enough dance action in this part of Oahu yet, but it is coming because of the Rail Catastrophe. However there seems to be much interest in a new dance club from Ewa Beach to Honokai Hale. Ewa Beach has had many stop and go for 30 years, that I know of, and have all fizzled out. Why? Does anyone know?

"Love is a symbol of eternity. It wipes out all sense of time, destroying all memory
of a beginning and all fear of an end."

Anyway, my opinion is that it will be somewhere between Kaleloa Harbor and Kalealoa Airport. Perfect as anything, since that is a possible developing area for the first good nightclub  available to all the people in West Oahu. And that is coming too. It is going to take much longer to get merchandise from Honolulu to the West. Price of eggs, bread, milk going up now. The harbor and airport will be used more.

We have some terrific teachers of dance in the West. so just take the rock step for instance. You are usually taught that the man can go forward (break) on the left foot, then rock back on the right foot - Rumba, Cha, Cha Cha, Beguine, Calypso, Montuno and at least 50 others in Latin America. The lady dances the complementary movement. Then the man can break on the right foot back and rock back on his left. The lady dances the complementary movement. This is also used as an alternative basic in the American style Rumba.

Then there is the side step. The man breaks to the left with his left foot and rocks back on his right foot. And then breaks to the right on his right foot and rocks back on his left. The lady dances in mirror fashion. The left turn follows, and then the right turn. All very basic and very useful to learn in any dance.

So there is more interest in dancing in the West and to do anything to avoid going to town in the Freeway mess that is due to get worse when the Rail Disaster is in. We must find more Public access to dancing anywhere in the West. And one of these days, someone will discover the best dance floor on the coast at the Waianae District Park. Just beautiful.

Slow Process

Received a very nice Poster postcard Doug Kesler announcing his New Extravadanza at the Pacific Beach Hotel. Unfortunately I do not have a scanner anymore, I just donated it to the City Of Joy, next door neighbors, a church. I get graphics mostly by email, and if I get it in JPEG, it is perfect.

Meanwhile, part of my sporting around the computer is learning to make posters, so I made this one for Doug and we have plenty time for him to send me the good one. So if you gotta go downtown for a good evening of dining, dancing and good entertainment, this is it.

“Everything happens for a reason and every action has a reaction,
and what's meant to be will always find a way to come about.

Council Chair Ernie Martin has introduced and passed in the City Council a budget to plan and design and construct a Palladium type structure at the Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park. It would have meeting rooms on the 1st floor on one side and an Oahu Cultural Arts Center and a Performing Arts Center on the other side. It would also have ballroom dance floor on the 2nd floor

The beautiful Articulated Bus, with enough of these we coulda had it made in the shade.

The budget amount is held in the Mayor's Office and needs to be release but Caldwell needs the money for the Rail Disaster. And we should understand - its the bread, Fred. The County owns the property to build this much needed facility on the west side of Oahu. The County acquired the land with an exchange with Castle and Cooke.

The funding for construction planning and design is about $20 million but the Present Rail Party wants it. There are millions and millions of dollars in profits in that Choo Choo train. And we should know them by now, they are going to get it, by hook or by crook.

But private enterprise is not going to wait, there will be place to dance in the Kalealoa area between the Kalealoa Harbor and the Kalealoa Airport. With a couple Business Parks, that will really make Kapolei into Second City, and many people will be able to live, work and play in their own Kuleana.

Too many formats, so I posted to my notepad and cleaned, then cut and posted to the blog and then removed all formatting. Then the graphic was handled separate. There will be another version in the Sea Country blog. I like to fiddle around.

I need to get out, and move around, now that I am able to handle my walker better. So I will see if I can make the trip to Wahiawa. Just two buses, the #40 and the #62. I will see if I can make the connections without too much trouble. Would be a nice outing for me. And I can test my new laptop with song videos.
